Just trying out blogger a bit. My trip to Japan is now just 2 months out, and trying to get my ducks in a row, including how to update friends and fam that I'm still alive while traveling.
I'll be gone 22 days traveling to and in Honshu, the main island of Japan. It'll be my first trip abroad (discounting Canada and the Bahamas) and also my first solo trip. I've wanted to go to Japan since I was a kid and got hooked on Nintendo games, anime, and from movies like Lost in Translation.
Japan, and Tokyo in particular is one of the most expensive places to travel based on what I've read and some of the hotel rates I've seen. As such, I'm trying to bring down costs where I can. The easiest areas to bring down are food and board. For food I'll be trying to stick to convenient store breakfasts and street food for lunch and dinner (and budget for a few nice meals). For board I'll be doing a mix of hostels, capsule hotels, internet cafes, and urban camping pitching a tent in out of the way areas.
Current Trip Status:
I have my plane tickets. Flights are on 3/15 and 4/6 and are about 17 hours each. I'll be landing in Osaka and leaving from Tokyo.
I have a hotel booked for the first night I land. I'm not great about sleeping on planes and will probably just want a place to crash when I land.
I booked a Hostel in Kyoto for 7 nights. My itinerary for Kyoto seems easier to set, and seemed like a home base would be the best way to see what I want. Tokyo I expect to meander more, but be able to find capsule hotels, internet cafes, or parks easier.
I have my required gear but haven't packed yet. I also need to order yen via my bank soon, as Japan is a largely cash based economy (from what I've read).
Next post I'll try to include more budget details, have a more detailed itinerary, and have more details on my pack and gear including weight.
