We were trying to figure out if we wanted to do something. The main thing id considered was the Akrotiri ruins on the south side of the island. The downside is wed have to rent a car and drive there or pay even more and take a taxi both ways. Decided instead on the prehistori Thera museum (what the island was called prior to being named Santorini by the Italians). Turned out to be a great choice. It houses the major frescos and artifacts uncovered at Akrotiri. For context Santori is a semi active volcano. It errupted in 1600 BC wiping out the local inhabitants and possibly harming the Minoan civilization on Crete, our next destination. Akrotiri is a preserved city like Pompeii. It had been abandoned, so there arent the bodies like at Pompeii but preserved buildings and artifacts.
The museum is cool because it puts the frescos in a placement of the house they were originally in. I.e. they reconstructed the old walla of this 1600bc home and reconstructed the frescos in their original positions.
Took about an hour and a half, and then we walked back. Sarah is a trooper this was 30 minutes both ways in the sun and heat. Stopped at a grocery store for water which was a good idea, and way cheaper than the tourist shops around. Picked up seafood cones, chips & fried cod in a cone. Was good but 2 was too much for us.
The rest of the day consisted of lounging in the pool and deck, watching the sunset, ringed Sarah, and finally had a nice dinner at a place nearby. Sarah had mousakka and it was amazing. Lasagna but without the pasta. So its like a cheese, sauce, minced meat dish with eggplant and potato. I jad grilled squid which was well done, not chewy, but wasnt my favorite. Appetizer was santorini mashed fava beans with onion, capers, caper leaves, in olive oil. Oh also the waiter sounded just like Mr Bean, which was extra funny for us because apparently Mr Bean is poular here, probably because there not really much talking in it. We watched it on the last ferry ride and going to youtube in the lasg hotel mr bean was a top pick. Anyway I really really liked the fava. Sarah was so so on it. Was like mashed potato texture, lightly salty. Not sure how to describe its flavor wise.
We also had Nico book us a taxi for tomorrow at 2. So hopefully it works out this time.
Love the last photo.
