Ope, Sumimasen

Generic title as everyone day I've bumped into someone and always say "ope" before saying "sumimasen" (excuse me)

Quick correction to previous post, what I thought was Rainbow Trout was in fact Konjac and what I thought was Salmon was the Rainbow Trout.

We had our breakfast at Nyakamuraya  which was salads and fish and soup and rice and more salads, and tiny fish with reddish.  One neat thing was we had fresh yuba.  Its soy milk that cooks in a pot and you skim off the skin which is the yuba until it's gone.  Was good.

Checking out the owner took us to meet and play with all the cats one last time and give them treats.  She took some pictures for us and we went on our way.

Today can mostly be summarized by we barely made it to the next stay and then we grabbed very late lunch and had dinner and watched a few episodes of the Flash.  So if you want to stop reading here that's fine.

Longer version is we had to take a bus to a station to get to the Shinkansen that would take us to Kanazawa.  The bus left on time but makes stops as needed, and one of the stops on this windy snowy way was a hiker rest stop and inn where about 10 people got on.  Apparently the isles of the bus have fold down seats to store more people.  We had a bus ticket ahead of time but when these folks got off there was a lot of fumbling with cash.

We were already nervous because our connection time was 25 minutes and we still had to get a ticket.  We were down to 15 minutes for the connection when we stopped and had to get our bags off and rushed to the station.  The counter for tickets was full and slow moving, the 4 machines were packed and not moving fast.  I got to one but couldn't find it and was like well we missed the train.

Regrouping with Sarah I looked and saw that the next trains would leave
... tomorrow.  I headed back to the tickets to see if anything could be done.  LUCKILY white knight rail worker asked what I needed and told him we were going to Kanazawa.  He punched it in the machine with reserve tickets and I thanked him and frantically starting putting my money in.  He said "No need to rush it's ok".  I pointed at the time and said, "Isn't that now?" Which it was, the trains come on the minute and leave in 1 minute. He said "It's ok that train is late, 10 minutes behind"

Complete stroke of luck, i could see it was red on the monitor but hadn't realized it.  Phwewewewwwwwww.

The shinkansen was a smooth ride all the way.  If anyone likes numbers it can get to top speed (this one at least Hokuriku line) of 165mph.  We went past mountains in Nagano and then west along the sea of Japan.  Scenic but there are lots of tunnels.

Kanazawa station is pretty bustling.  We got more station stamps there (rubber and ink stamps for our books) and got on a town bus to where we needed to be.  Very cute neighborhood in a historic district with well maintained old homes and gardens and signage describing the things around here, probably more details tomorrow.

The airbnb we're at is very cozy and we might do some laundry here tomorrow.  Getting used to various Japanese gadgets and heating in homes that don't have insulation.  Mini split heaters and a heated floor mat.  Controls to heat and vent the bathroom as well as dry clothes in it.  The dining room table has buttons to move it up and down, very cute.  We have a view of the river in the bedroom.  Its tatami mat with more of a foam mattress instead of the futons we had last night which were none too kind to Sarahs back.

Think were gonna pass out pretty quick and tomorrow will be a day of exploring Kanazawa.

  1. Did you actually eat those little fish? They look too "animated" for me and it looks like their eyes are whacko. If you DID eat them, what did they taste like?

    1. All of them the previous night, most of them that morning. Sarah ate some at dinner. They're very tiny and that's a pretty zoomed in image. The mostly taste like whatever they're in, in this case grated Daikon Radish. So it was slight spicy, radish taste. No crunch but texturally there. It probably adds a mild flavor just nothing that stood out to me.
